Trip Leader: Dr. Mijana Lockard, mlockard2@flsouthern.edu

Our student trip to Croatia combines cultural immersion with hands-on learning in one of Europe’s most scenic coastal regions. You’ll live like a Croatian while spending time in historic cities and coastal communities, experiencing everyday traditions, local life, and the Adriatic setting. Through field experiences across Croatia, you’ll explore how real places support interdisciplinary learning and fresh ways of thinking. You will explore cuisine, culture, and nature through local meals, markets, and daily interactions. Visits to historic landmarks and UNESCO-listed sites provide historical context, while time in national parks and island hopping in the Adriatic highlight Croatia’s landscapes and maritime traditions. Time in Split focuses on its origins as a Roman center, including Diocletian’s Palace and the nearby ruins of Salona, once the capital of the Roman province of Dalmatia. A visit to Klis Fortress above the city offers insight into centuries of regional defense and sweeping views of the surrounding landscape. Additional stops include the Romanesque town of Trogir and Zadar’s Sea Organ — an architectural instrument that uses ocean waves and underwater pipes to create music.

Rome & the Amalfi Coast

Rome & the Amalfi Coast

Italy

Oct 17 - Oct 25

Semester: Fall  2026

1 Credit Hour

Trip Leader: Jonathan Cazalas, jcazalas@flsouthern.edu

From the eternal grandeur of Rome to the sun-drenched cliffs of the Amalfi Coast, this journey traces the arc of Italian civilization; from the monumental ambitions of empire to the intimate rhythms of coastal village life. In Rome, you'll walk through the corridors of history itself. Stand inside the Colosseum, where ancient crowds once roared, and wander the Roman Forum, the political heart of an empire that shaped Western law, language, and architecture. Then step into the Vatican, where Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel ceiling still inspires awe five centuries later, and St. Peter's Basilica renders the ambitions of Renaissance faith in marble and gold. Between these iconic sites, Rome reveals itself in quieter moments: the baroque theatricality of the Trevi Fountain, the engineering marvel of the Pantheon's oculus, the fashionable energy of the Spanish Steps. From the capital, we travel south by high-speed rail as the landscape transforms from urban sprawl to the dramatic volcanic coastline of Campania. Our base in Sorrento, perched on cliffs above the Tyrrhenian Sea, offers the perfect gateway to one of the world's most celebrated coastlines, where the pace of life slows and the air carries the scent of lemon and sea salt. We'll wind along the legendary Amalfi Drive to Positano, where pastel-colored houses cascade down steep hillsides to a pebbled beach. Further along, the town of Amalfi's cathedral stands testament to its days as a powerful maritime republic. Above the town, terraced hillsides yield the famous Amalfi lemons, whose fragrant groves we'll tour before a hands-on cooking class with local hosts; learning the secrets of regional cuisine, from fresh pasta to limoncello. One day is yours to explore independently. Walk the haunting streets of Pompeii, frozen in time by Vesuvius's eruption in 79 AD, or visit Herculaneum, its smaller but remarkably preserved neighbor. Hike to the crater's edge of Mount Vesuvius for panoramic views of the bay, or ferry to Capri, where the Blue Grotto glows with ethereal azure light and the Gardens of Augustus frame views that defy description. Our final evening returns us to Rome's Trastevere: cobblestone streets, ivy-covered trattorias, and vibrant piazzas that capture the soul of contemporary Roman life. A fitting farewell, and a reminder that Rome is not merely a museum of antiquity but a living city where ancient and modern intertwine seamlessly. Throughout the journey, you'll savor fresh seafood, handmade pasta, creamy gelato, and the region's famous limoncello. Trip costs include airfare, three and four-star hotel accommodations (double or triple occupancy), all meals, high-speed and local rail travel, buses, private coastal transfers, and professional guided tours at featured sites.

This program offers students a multi-sensory immersion into the layers of North American history, from 17th-century subterranean ruins to modern bilingual urban life. By exploring the cobblestone streets of the historic district and the fortified walls of a UNESCO World Heritage site, participants will witness the architectural and social endurance of French culture in the New World. The experience transitions from the solemnity of Gothic Revival landmarks to the vibrant energy of open-air markets and world-class botanical collections, providing a comprehensive view of how tradition and innovation coexist in a globalized city. Beyond historical inquiry, students will engage with the physical and cultural geography of the region. They will observe the intersection of nature and urbanity while navigating mountain-top lookouts, massive waterfalls, and the intricate street art of diverse residential neighborhoods. This journey challenges students to develop global competency as they navigate a bilingual environment, sample regional culinary staples, and analyze the unique sociopolitical forces that distinguish the province of Quebec within the North American landscape.
